Earning points

With the Amex Business Gold Plus Card, you’ll earn up to 1.5 Amex Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent on everyday spend (excluding government payments.)

This is a decent earn rate, but not quite as good as the Amex Business Explorer Card (2 Amex Membership Rewards Points per dollar) or the Amex Platinum Business Card (2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Points per dollar.)  However, compared to the the Amex Platinum Business Card, the Amex Business Gold Plus Card has a much lower annual fee, and you’ll also earn bonus points on select business software and services, which we outline below.

Amex Business Gold Plus Card Members earn bonus points on the following spend:

  • 3 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent at Xero, Google Ads, Meta, Amazon Web Services and Dell.⁵
  • 2 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent with AccessLine®. Subject to approval. Enrolment required.5
  • 1.5 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent on everyday spend.5
  • 1 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent on government payments.5

These earn rates apply to the first 200,000 Membership Rewards Points earned per calendar year. Afterwards, you’ll continue to earn 1 point per $1 spent across all categories, with no cap.

Amex Membership Rewards Points do not expire, provided that your account remains active. So, it’s a good idea to keep your points in your Amex Membership Rewards account until you’re ready to use them with an airline or hotel partner, or wait for a transfer bonus offer.

Earning points for ATO & government payments

A huge advantage of the American Express Business Gold Plus Card is the ability to earn points on government payments. You’ll earn a reduced rate of 1 Membership Rewards Point per $1 on payments made directly to the Australian Tax Office (ATO) or other government bodies in Australia when using your Amex Business Gold Plus Card.

Using Amex Membership Rewards Points

Amex Membership Rewards points earned on this Card can be converted to more than 10 airlines and two hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 conversion rate.⁵ Here’s the full list of Amex transfer partners:
