Thought I'd share this with you guys. Yeah tl;dr, but still.
Went out with 29 year old second daughter to look at cars today. She had a company car for about four years before losing her last job (and getting a better job, but sans car).
She's been driving my wife's car for about the past month or so to get to her new job. There have been times recently when I got home late from work to see the wife alone (apart from the dog) looking forlorn at being unable to even go down the shop. This was a worry as she is almost always relentlessly happy and optimistic.
So my daughter's loan came through, and she asked me to help her rather than her boyfriend, who a bit shy (as an aside, I don't think that the current generation is any good at bargaining, and that car dealers rub their hands when they see them).
So off to get a second hand Toyota RAV4.
The car she saw advertised was petrol and with 40,000 km on the clock, advertised at $29900. She drove it, but wasn't sure she liked the colour. The sales guy then said there was a turbo diesel model (much more expensive when new) in the colour she wanted. 30k on the clock, with much better extras, like an inbuilt satnav. Advertised price was $35,990. way above budget.
So Blinky goes into action. I told him that the price was ridiculous, and that my daughter had only $30k (not quite true....in fact not true at all). He laughed and said we could't do business. "Okay" I said "what is your best price?". After a phone call and a bit of mumbling he said "$33,880". I did my best incredulous stare and said "$31,000, and we need an answer as we have other dealers to see (we didn't)". Without boring you with the whole bit of theatre, his final offer was $32,500.
I said "$32,250". He walked away and said sorry. This is the first time I've seen a car dealer do this (I've negotiated about 10 cars for my seven kids). I said to him "You want us to walk over $250?", and he said "Sorry".
So we went back to my car and tried on my iPad to find the same car at a similar price. Unsuccessfully.
So we went back in and accepted the $32,500 price. I think it was a pretty good deal.
But more than that, it was a wonderful team Blinky effort. On the way back home, we stopped and had lunch at a pub. As part of wide ranging discussions, she told me that all the kids considered themselves lucky to have the upbringing they had. Life is well and truly worthwhile.
