I always laugh at those posed photos in the labs. I remember someone I worked with in IT went into a lab and was shocked how grotty it was.

Expecting 4,000 to attend yet my local football club can’t have more than 50 people placed around the whole oval

No objection to people protesting if that's what they really want to do (it is a freedom we enjoy), but don't like the double standards. The organisers could actually create something more significant, and mediaworthy though than an old fashioned march/gathering. What about doing it at dusk and lining the streets spaced 1.5m apart with torches or candles? In Melbourne, you could line the Hoddle grid like this with almost 15,000 people.

Absolutely pathetic and disgusting decision - people have made enormous personal sacrifices to 'do the right thing' yet all that goes out the window for a 'protest'. Lots of people's funerals were 'one-off, unique situations' but spouses and family couldn't attend.

I'm glad the NSW government has found some spine now.

Ha ha. OK, I'll start with my experience in the Green Movement in Tasmania in the late 1970s in the 'No Dams' marches (yes, I did ). There were the grannies and kids who were thrust into the front couple of lines of the march to get the media's attention and to insulate the guys behind them from being got at by the cops. Then there were the ladies who were tasked with carrying the marbles to throw under the police horses hooves. Of course, the horse could fall and break a leg , but if so, maybe topple on top of one of the cops. That caused everyone to start screaming, the police to come in with force, at which time we all crowded round so it looked like they were harassing us ... Lots of screaming and hopefully the kids were somewhere to get into the shot.

Some would be stationed off to the side to get pics of the police when they moved in. Cue for several rows to collapse onto the ground, screaming and writhing and upsetting everyone. The media used to love it. Guaranteed lead story on the ABC.

In the middle of the march were the Trots who were there to take over when things got frisky; they were usually too gutto to start anything. Tagging along was the Lake Pedder Liberation Fringe. Ooops, sorry, I just made that up.

But of course you may not believe I was there. I could easily have gotten this off the "peaceful protest" manuals you can find anywhere on the internet these days. .

30-odd years later, I'm back at Uni ... still keeping the skills up.

He also said the plans had been made for that sized protest to be held that would comply with the social distancing rules.Tell im he's dreaming.

The ‘illegal’ march in Sydney tomorrow is going to be interesting on a number of fronts so to speak. Especially in about two weeks or so to see whether there’s any virus outbreaks. Let’s hope they all have their tracing app on.

Given that its been deemed legal in SA, the results in 10-14 days will be equally as interesting. But actually I'm incredibly angry about this after so many liberties and lives have been wrecked from the restrictions only for our 'rights to the democratic process' to suddenly kick in.

Maybe SAPOL did not want to try and be King Canute?

Personally I think that things are less likely to get out of control, including social distancing, if what is clearly going to happen anyway is allowed to occur in a more moderated way that if it becomes "police vs demonstrators" chaos and morseo as it was sparked by a police over-action in the first place..

Secondly in terms of pandemic risk:

• there are very few infected Australians at large in Australia at present
• the protests will be outside

To me the much bigger risk would be to try to suppress what will in the main be reasonably peaceful protests if managed well, despite no doubt the best efforts of a few radicals who will try and inflame matters and who will no doubt cause some angst.
