Fly Buys Flight and Hotel Redemption

My parents have accumulated a great many flybuys points, despite it being a fairly average program. Have usually redeemed for household items etc. I am recommending they burn the points on hotels or flights, and read somewhere that Flybuys flight redemption simply involve a flybuys staff member booking the member on the flight; ie the seat does not come out of an awards fare bucket? Can anyone confirm this? If so, it is a sort of poor-man's any seat award, and would presumably qualify for frequent flyer points.

Similarly, is a flybuys hotel redemption earn points and status with any hotel loyalty programs?

I don't believe it's like an any seat award - there must be availability in a certain booking class (which one I know not).
