Point expiring before flight

Hi All
I am going to Istanbul, and will be using EK. I was thinking I might use my Skywards point, but some of them expire before I am flying. Can I buy the ticket and book the upgrade before they expire, even though the flight will be after the expire date.
I hope that I have been clear.
