i am booked to travel from jfk to sydney return on qf12 on the 13th sept 2011 and returning on qf 107 on the 28th of september, flying in the business class cabin. while i can confirm seats on qf12 and AA codeshare, i cannot make a seat request for the return to jfk on qf107..is this normal?

Yes, this is quite normal. The flight from SYD to LAX will be on a 747 and then you are connecting onto the A330 that is coming from AKL. I would give QF a buzz and ask them to allocate you seats. (If you booked through a TA they should be bale to handle this as well.)
