Why aren't users notified when and why a post is deleted?

It strikes me as moderation by stealth and not very helpful. Having a reason for a deletion would be helpful.

There also needs to be a more even hand in such deletions, since the post I am thinking of which got deleted was in response to a pointless post to start off with, so why wasn't the original deleted?

I'm not questioning anyone's authority, I'm asking a reasonable question. Also, having met 3 of the mods, I expect to receive a reasoned and professional response so I'll take the smiley at the end of your post to mean that you are joking around.

Moderators do try to advise why a post was deleted. ... either by a PM or a post in the thread.

While deletions are better done sooner rather than later and are so prioritised, we may not have the time to follow up immediately.

Hahaha that is so untrue, we have a broad range of mods all doing a great job and even one who is really quite junior with not much flying experience at all relative to the members here, who goes the extra mile to organise all the social events! I have found all current mods to be fair and reasonable. We won't talk about some mods who have since left

In a forum like Whirlpool (for example) if a post is deleted by a mod the poster automatically can see the reason, which mod deleted it, and the ability to PM the mod directly or appeal it.

Works quite well.

The moderation here isnt too bad but did have an issue a few months ago and disagreed with the process.

On a cruise forum I am on the moderation is awful. And mention the US gun laws in relevant conversations is a total red flag.

I've been on the wrong end of a moderator's actions a couple of times (OK, more than a couple ..) ... most I understood, some were not explained and I genuinely didn't understand what had occurred and at least one I thought reflected the personal position of the moderator concerned in the debate on hand which I thought was a bit rough and I contemplated complaining to Admin.

But I'm grateful for the mods' time in keeping the flight in the air and overall its not worth getting stressed over. Just like in sport - sometimes you get a rough ref's call, but ... play on.

All in all I am very happy with this forum. It would be nice to know why a post is removed, but in all seriousness, I think that it is almost always very clear, even without a PM

Perhaps the original was overlooked, but if you knew the post you were replying to was off-topic/pointless already, it should come as no surprise why your post was deleted, right?

I did have a look back at your posts, and the only deleted post recently that I can see I would imagine you understand why it was deleted.

I think that's something that could be looked into, depends what forum software they use though and what forum software we use as to whether it would integrate well. Something to discuss, I'll make a note of it

There is an inherent conflict when the mods are also people who post regularly to the forum. Obviously none of this stuff actually matters in the real world, but I have experienced a number of occasions where the "mod hat" has not been worn with equanimity but instead used as a way to win petty arguments. Absolute power corrupts and all that.

Being the mild-mannered person I am I have not (to my knowledge) had a post deleted by a moderator. Perhaps my turn will come. But I have struggled at times to understand why some posts are moved to another thread while similar posts remain.

Agree with the comment that this stuff doesn't matter too much in the scheme of things, but I am surprised at times at the passion that emerges in certain threads.

It's a shame that you are concerned enough to post that you have an issue but not concerned enough to help resolve the problem.

All reported posts are seen be all mods and admin and you would probably be surprised at some of the reported posts. Anything that is controversial is discussed at the time or at the very least at a mods meeting so if there is a decision that you don't agree with individually then please remember that it is not an individual decision. Like everyone else we are governed by the forum rules and individually may not always agree with everything that is said and frequently use the report function ourselves.

This in itself is why the report function is so important rather than sending PMs to one or more mods. Any such report is sent to all the mods and admin.

I would share some of the reasoned and professional responses I've received - except that would be an infraction to share private communications. You are always free to ask Admin. But then they are more than happy to ignore you.

That's a bold statement. I will have to disagree. And I think all mods have done a heap of flying, even getting to P1 with qantas for one mod who organises a lot of social events.
