Uber & Travel SIM card

Hi again fellow travellers,

This may seem a dumb question but...

I’m about to go to London and will use an overseas travel SIM card.

Will my Uber account work immediately I exit LHR or do I need to do anything such as update my profile or register a new account?

Just update your Uber account to the local number you’re using but it’s not essential to use the app.

Also it's easy to add a new payment type and then choose between the two eg if you have a travelcard

A side note, when using Uber overseas I use either my Coles MC or 28 Degrees MC to ensure the best exchange rate.

One of the issues of using Uber with a travel SIM is that the number associated with the Travel SIM can be a recycled one. A recycled phone number might have been at one time associated with an Uber account. So associating your Uber account to a previously associated phone number may cause issues and may require contact with Uber or worse another SIM card.

You can add multiple payment methods to your Uber account. When confirming your trip, you should make sure you've selected the correct payment source.

I've used Uber in a few countries and had an issue with my AMEX in Auckland recently. So yeh have a couple of methods of payments. You can't use credit from gift cards bought in Australia in other countries either.

I do not believe you need to change the phone number to the local sim.

I was in London in June, and used uber twice on my tablet which had a local UK data sim in it, but left my AU phone number in the account (which was in my phone in my handbag). The only thing I changed was y payment method to use my citibank debit card so as to attract no currency conversion fees.

If the driver cant find you they can contact you via the app (sms or data call within the app), they dont need to call the phone outsode the app.

I'm not sure about all of the people telling you all will be OK. I was in the US recently so can report my experience that everything will not be OK.

My UBER account would not work with the new number.

Needed to take some screenshots and contact UBER.

Took about an hour for it to be sorted.

Ouch - I guess it’s going to be a case of wait & see. Makes it hard to order a Uber at Paddington Station.
