What Drugs/Medicine Do You Take With You When Travelling

Just wondering what drugs/medicines do people take with them when travelling.

I guess the standard one for me is panadol; anything gets sore take one of those and sometimes Sudafed if I remember.

I recently got sick before I travelled last weekend, so went to the doctor to get a prescription and also they suggested I take some antihistmine tablets(Fexotabs) with me, something I hadn't really thought about taking with me before.

Getting sick or being sick while away is no fun; but if you have the right stuff then it can make the trip that little bit more bearable.

I think I took about 20 panadols in the 3 days that I was away.

So just wondering what else should be included.

I take Restavit (anti-histamine based drowsiness preparation), some Panadol (or substitute), Centrum (hardly medicine but can be difficult to track down in Europe), and have previously taken tetracycline. Just make sure you carry what a normal person would consider a 'reasonable amount for personal consumption' and you should have no problems.

Some pain killer like panadol/nuerofen/asprin etc
Sudafed - very important if you have to fly and have a cold, ever flown with blocked sinus's, very painful !

And depending where i am going i also make sure i take something like imodium and all sorts of other things.... just depends if i am heading to the middle of Mongolia or the middle of Singapore, its a very different packing list.

Last year, I wanted to bring Tamiflu with me to Turkey as apparently there were a number of bird flu cases there, but I was not able to find a chemist that had any in stock...the government had stockpiled all of it!!

In the past, I've used "Travelan" in India, Cambodia and other dodgy foodwise countries to stay away from the porcelin bus seat. It has done all it has claimed to do, but them again it prevented shark attack also during those trips.

For the cost of $2-3 a day I am happy to continue the field trial.

I travel with Osteoeze for arthritis and recently travelled with an anti-inflammatrory that was in my checked luggage so I had a painful two weeks in London...

Here's a tip - travel with meds in hand luggage. I also decant my Osteoeze into a ziplock so I now keep a torn off part of the packaging to show what they are just in case...

In relation to prescription medication, I take a tablet daily for blood pressure and a table for reflux (Pariet), so when I travel if I am going to be away for three weeks I take six weeks medication with three weeks packed in carry on and three weeks packed in checked luggage. I also make 3 copies of the prescriptions, one in carry on, one in checked bag and one left with friend back home in case. This is through experience as I have been caught out several years ago. Just in case I also leave a photocopy of front and back of my credit with a 'trusted' friend back home just in case.

- Sleeping pills (Stilnox or equivalent). Great for getting over jetlag
- Neurofen. Used to have a tooth that was cabin-pressure-sensitive - hurt like bu**ery for an hour or so into each flight
- Corkscrew (not really a drug, but you get the idea). Tend to use this more than the other two combined. It's amazing how often it comes in useful

Corkscrews are an endangered species. I have had to request one several times in hotels over the last year, people are either nicking them, or because they are such high quality they are getting broken often or something

Interesting product, although I am a little worried about whether it's more Placebo than Medico. Havn't really had a bad porcelain experience overseas, so wouldn't really know if it worked or not!

For me, I tend to take some Aspirin, some multi-vitamins if travelling for a while but no other real pharma items.

You may be correct in it's placebo effect. I have had 4 severe food poisoning cases in the past and they were not pleasant.

Since using the product I have never had problems eating from street vendors in India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Vietnam, China, Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore and next week in Laos hopefully.

I am not endorsing the product, but I can guarantee it is also 100% effective as an alligator repellant as I have never seen one whilst taking the medication. Lots of pink elephants though.

I will continue the field trial.

If you take prescription drugs like me, I get a letter annually from my doctor, which lists them plus the normal painkillers [ specifying codine ] etc.

He told me certain pain killers [ if it includes codine ]and the likes of sudefed are not welcome in some countries.

I always carry them as hand luggage with letter enclosed.

That's it this time, sometime a course of Antibiotics (with a photocopy of prescription)

If using checked luggage:-Corkscrew (fully agree with above posts)
Folding tool kit ( -Knife, screw drivers, pliers, can opener, fish scaler files, etc)

Unfortunately, the last two are a no no these days if doing carry on only.

For me, I generally take some Nurofen Plus, Imodium Plus and sometimes some Panadene equivalent. I've been caught out too many times through Asia to not carry the Imodium and once in the US (with a tooth abscess) on a weekend and not being able to get painkillers strong enough (anything with Codeine in the US requires a prescription)

Nothing really exciting there, but something I do that might be of use to others is that I use the QF J hard plastic amenities kit to put the tablet sheets in - It keeps them secure and stops the tablets from rupturing the foil. It took me ages to figure out some use for those kits - now I finally have one... I just need to figure out what to do with all the extra cases I have now!
