Wrong. They may have decided they 'want' to or 'must have'. (not 'need' to.)

The report they did last year that put them on the de-list, administration path they are currently on says that they 'want' and 'need'. It was a question they asked themselves....

It is probably due to the fact that they are a developing country, and national institutions like airlines can promote their image overseas.

Does Malaysia need a national airline?

(1) the Malaysian people, through their government, are perfectly capable of making decisions about their needs.
(2) "need" was your choice of words.
(3) making a distinction between "need" and "must have" is interesting to say the least. Some might call it brave or adventurous.

I have no statistics to back me up, but I suspect if any developing country wanted to promote its image overseas, those dollars would be better spent in advertising and not in propping up yet another basket case airline.

And I hate advertising!

Their system is far from perfect but it's also far from the worst.
I don't think the limitations of their democracy are relevant to decisions about MH.
Whereas they are very relevant to decisions about free speech and minorities, for example.
Besides, we have free and fair elections and look what we did with them.
The rest of the world questions our capacity to make decisions about our own future!

I grew up in Malaysia and have friends who work for MH. They work very hard but for years the airline was used by sultans, ministers and cronies as their free cargo and private jets. MH needs a good clean up and I'm glad that it is happening but I'm sad that it took few tragedies for it to happen.

Just wondering what people thought of the axing of MH flights KUL-BNE and the cutbacks to other Australian Cities

Malaysia Airlines axes Brisbane flights, trims Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth - Australian Business Traveller

I was disappointed that BNE got axed altogether but surprised (crash helmet on) that ADL didn't. Apart from leaving me scratching my head about OW options for BNE-KUL, they had some excellent connections through to DXB, DEL, IST and other places I found handy. KUL was a great transit point too even if I never got an invite into the fancy-pants section of the Golden Lounge there.

They had some great fares as well, will be interested to see what they do with their pricing with their reduced frequency.

What is Airbus going to do with the 6 A380 though? It is not exactly cheap to buy it back ....

Probably smart for Airbus to get them back and lease them out, any other options will see 380's at a fire sale price and being sold for less than they cost to build. There is an upside to every down, good for Boeing of course.

Adelaide survives for now, but I wonder if it's simply because less other international competition out of Adelaide than Brisbane.

I think theyll struggle to sell even 2!

They can't even GIVE them away unfortunately... Skymark (which didn't even take delivery) still has all theirs too offload too.

Consumers love the A380 but for airlines they are very difficult to make money from.
