I think things will seem more 'normal' in some senses by then, one way or the other. Getting COVID-19 might not seem like quite such a big deal.

I'm heading back tonight and have no real qualms about doing so, and my husband's been perfectly happy staying there.

I wouldn't recommend a tourist visit in the next month or so if interacting with people there is a high priority, everyone's just too stressed out. If into buildings or nature and the like, there's probably not been a better time in many years.

Japan's top six count by prefecture as of 10:30 this morning is

The Aichi number keeps going up as tests are processed for people who attended what the Ministry of Health describes as 'a certain place in Nagoya', which does not appear to have been helping sentiment in the area.

51 serious cases, which breaks down to 36 for Diamond Princess passengers and crew (out of 705 'quarantined' positives) and 15 for 'domestic' cases (out of 175). 32 of those 175 have been discharged from hospital.

Four primary school teachers used the same gym, and so 61 schools and kindergartens in that Chiba city are to be closed until March 12 as a precautionary measure.

The Hokkaido prefectural assembly is to suspend sittings for 12 days.

Those testing negative at this juncture will be taken to a government-operated facility in Saitama and have their health monitored for 14 days. Those who then test negative again will be allowed to leave the country.

Schools are to stay closed until spring holiday, meaning that kids will be off until the second week of April.

It's a really big deal. Not all that easy to make alternative arrangements for the next three weeks (which would have been the remainder of the term).

Like others watching this thread, I have a trip to Japan coming up - from May 16 in my case. The fear factor (or perhaps the fear of losing the Olympics) now seems to be driving Japanese Government decision-making. I am not easily deterred from visiting and don't wish to seem flippant but I am beginning to wonder if anything will actually be open by the time we get there.

ditto to @disruptivedolphin . My plans to fly into KIX in a couple of weeks still intact, but I’m not that impressed with the Japanese govt response to date. Not so much worried about contracting the virus but being locked out of my return transit in SIN.
