Qantas Seat selection - Cannot Select

I booked two flights on the same ticket via the Qantas website to use up a travel credit I had sitting for two years.

First flight is with Jetstar, Second is Qantas.

Both say I can't select seats
"Seat selection isn't available"

I'm going to be with my two kids who are 4 and 7 and I have to be sitting next to them.
What are my chances of this? Seeing as I am as I assume going to be given seats at the airport when we check in for the flights.
Under no circumstances can I have my kids this age sitting with strangers for two flights.

For the Jetstar flight, you would need to do seat selection from Jetstar's side. You should have the details you need to manage your booking from the emails sent out.

It's strange that the Qantas flight doesn't have seat selection. When you try to select seats for the Qantas flight, is it actually on flight 2 and Qantas leg?

I find that for multi flight on the same booking, regardless of if you select flight 1 or flight 2 to change seats, it always goes to flight 1 first then flight 2. So you may be seeing the Jetstar "unavailable" when you choose the Qantas leg too and need to click the next flight button.

If the QF flight is a QFlink Dash8 flight you wouldn't be able to select seats on that, otherwise you should be able to

UNLESS there were not enough free seats to allow all 3 seat changes in the cabin of choice with your status level. Unlikely, but possible.

Try giving QF a call (good luck!) re the QF sector.

It’s Sydney to Canberra
Never been on this flight or plane I usually go with virgin but wanted to use this credit

I can do the seats with Jetstar but have to pay the seat fee which is fine

Your chances of all sitting together are pretty good I reckon. Just as you don’t want your two children to be sitting away from you, neither does the airline! Primarily due to safety reasons, you should always be seating with your children (or at least one adult with one child, so if you had two adults and two children you could be split 2+2). By safety this means making sure seatbelts are fastened, assisting with oxygen masks, and not going against the flow to the exit in an emergency (while you loom for your child).

Qantas says they aim to seat families together, and advise advance seat selection of FOC. Although for the dash8 the advice above is might need to call to get it done.

Noting that dash 8 is 2 and 2 so one of the kids will have to be seated across the aisle as you cant get 3 seats on the same side of the aisle.

For Jetstar I’ll pay the fee to be sure as that one’s a 3 hour flight and has 3x3 so we can all sit together for that leg

For Dash 8 flights the only option is when online check in opens.

You’ll be able to swap the seats between you regardless of what it says on the boarding pass. So even if the 4yo is across the aisle you’ll be able to swap on board.

How would it work if the kids sat together in one of those pairs and you sit across the isle? This way, if the fourth seat in the row is occupied, it'll be you next to the other passenger instead one of the sweethearts.

Not ideal from a safety perspective? Seatbelts and oxygen masks etc

Best to have a buffer
