JQ intl to dom flight operated from intl

Hi all,

I'm flying on JQ14 KIX-SYD then going on 3 hours later to JQ17 SYD-MEL (same booking)
I'm a bit stumped. Will we collect baggage at SYD or will it be transferred as it's Intl flight -> Int'l terminal...? Do we exit T1 at SYD entirely, recheck bags then go back into T1 as a Domestic passenger flying internationally? It's not very clear anywhere on what will happen. Any advice/experiences welcomed.

Pretty sure it will be the former. You and your baggage will need to be cleared into Australia at SYD, as they will only be expecting 'D' sticker passengers on SYD-MEL.

They don’t tag anything through you need to recheck in. I’m not sure if they have changed things but even for hand carry on, the last tag flight I took it wouldn’t let me online checkin either.

Painful but they are a LCC I guess. I’ve stopped using the tag flights as they are often late. The last one I just asked to be put in a normal domestic flight otherwise it was a 5 hour delay.

The language in various places on the JQ site isn't helpful at best - on the Baggage Transfers page they state: (bolding my own)

"If you're transferring between domestic flights or between international and domestic flights, in most cases you’ll need to collect your baggage, check in again and transfer your bags.

Our check-in staff will let you know if your baggage will be transferred. You may still need to check in at the connecting airport to obtain your next boarding pass before check-in closes."

A dummy booking to replicate advises (just before paying and at the bottom of the screen...)


I'd say that's a pretty clear... maybe. The fact that outside of what amounts to a footnote, telling you that you'll find out when you check in doesn't help with planning.

Will the printed luggage tags and luggage receipt tell you what is going on with the checked luggage…?

If it’s being transferred to the connecting flight then your final and intermediate destinations will be printed on the tags and receipt.

If you need to collect and re-check then only the intermediate destination will be printed.

I might be wrong here. Someone smarter than me can confirm otherwise.

Pax can book JQ17 from SYD-HKT via MEL, and although it has the same caveat about economy only service, the timings definitely do not allow for bags to be collected and rechecked in MEL.

With no factual basis I would think bags would be connected in OP’s situation. JQ international do connect bags.

I would've expected that, while the bags will indeed be through-tagged to MEL, as SYD is the first point of entry into Australia, you'll need to clear customs, and collect and recheck the bags as it's international to domestic (even if leaving from international).

This also squares with what Qantas states: Help and Support | Qantas

No, certainly not the case with QF. It’s a special case. I assume same as JQi.

If the OP was flying for example JQ17 from SYD-MEL-HKT, the SYD-MEL sector would be international as it's part of a direct (but not non-stop) international service, but I would've thought that here, it's like any other domestic service as they're on a different incoming flight number (JQ14).

I can’t speak with absolute certainty for JQ but I have done the exact same with QF many times and bags are connected.

It’s no different to connecting to AKL for example.

Of course, SYD-AKL would be an international connection. SYD-MEL would not be.

This isn’t a regular SYD-MEL. It’s one that operates beyond the border so all pax and bags either need to be leaving / arriving from overseas or have D stickers.

Trust me, I (and so have many others here) have done this many times. It’s well known.

You missed the whole point about my AKL example. It’s treated exactly the same for pax either arriving or departing Australia. The only special handling is domestic only pax, which is the D stickers.

The flight from Osaka arrives at SYD T1. The SYD-MEL flight departs from SYD T1 & arrives at MEL T2.

SYD T1 and MEL T2 are international terminals.

Both the KIX flight and the MEL flight are treated as international.

At SYD T1 the OP will use Transit Security, never going landside.

The OP does customs and immigration at MEL T2.

Also remember why VA gave up the DPS rights? It wasn’t prepared to operate the flights as international sectors, which is required under the agreement.

However, I remain unconvinced that a SYD-MEL flight flown as that can be characterised as 'international' merely because it leaves from and arrives into an international terminal; that to me is a 'domestic' flight leaving from and arriving into an international terminal as the flight is wholly within Australia (which is usually what's meant by a 'domestic' flight), and thus the domestic transfer rules would apply (i.e. collect bags, clear customs, get a 'D' stamp on boarding pass, check back in, reclear security).

There's no need to "see" - it has been made very clear to you there is one, and only one, correct answer which is that the flights are treated as an international-to-international connection, using transit security in SYD and baggage fully checked through ( to be collected and customs entry at MEL). Let's not confuse the OP with speculation about how it could be different in an alternate world, when frequent travelers and experts have already confirmed how it actually works.

It doesn't fit squarely into either category and whether not you are happy with the terminology, is not really important to the correct answer in terms of how Jetstar actually operates these flights. The important part for this discussion, is that the tag flight is *treated* as international - i.e. outside border controls - for all relevant purposes.

Pre-covid I travelled from KIX to SYD on Jetstar with an international connection in BNE. I did transit security in BNE and cleared customs in SYD.
