Denarau Fiji

Need to head somwhere for 5 or 6 days ex MEL Boxing Day - seeking advice from you learned people regarding Denarau.

Just Cruiserette and myself - advice on which might be best quality resort - thinking studio room.

Did Vanuatu last year at La Lagon - thought about Cook Islands but flights arrive near midnight so first day completely lost.

Any other suggestions warmly welcomed and greatly appreciated.

I’m sure any hotel on Denarau would satisfy you, I’d look at prices and choose based on that…

See the thread on How Does Hilton Treat You as an Elite. There are quite a few good comments on the Hilton.

As Sam says though you will be happy with just about any of them.

We are currently at the Hilton and our daughter is currently at the Sheraton. The Westin is the most authentic.

I have phone no's of several good taxi drivers from the island if you need them.

I have stayed at the Sheraton Fiji, the Sheraton Villas and the Westin. They are basically all walking distance from each other and staying at either, you could use any of the three respective resort pools. From a room perspective, the Sheraton Fiji has the nicest/modern decor out of the three - the resort was renovated a few years ago; the Westin has the better pool area; but if you need space then the apartment style rooms at the Villas are the better option. That said, these resorts do have alot of families who stay there, so the common areas may not be as romantic/peaceful ... so just be mindful of that.

However quite a few here would recommend the Intercontinental Fiji. I haven't stayed there but seen the photos, read the reviews and I am quite impressed.

Stayed at the Westin in Aug Sept and no complaints.

We spoke to people on the Bulla bus and we heard no complaints except that the Radisson was insane with kids because they had a deal kids eat free.

Sheraton/Westin are all part of the same group so you can charge back to your room even if your not at the resort you are staying at.

The port has some great places to eat as long as you don't want 5 star dinning.

+1 for the Hilton. Can be some very reasonable deals for the 1 Bedroom apartments...

Back in Melbourne now and staying at Hilton South Wharf. Great place but I'd rather be back in Fiji.

An interesting one from The Fiji Hilton last night was that we were invited to managers drinks. This is something that I've not seen at a Hilton before and was really nice and pleasant with good drinks and great snacks. Overall they were generally keen to get good honest feedback which was great.

I had quite a good chat with the manager and he was quite interested to hear about AFF. He was already familiar with FT and Trip Advisor but AFF was new to him. He was quite interested to look at the forum and said he was happy to join up and contribute when appropriate.

For those discussing locations at Denarau there is The Worldmark Trendwest, Radisson, Sheraton Fiji, Sheraton Denarau Villas, Weston, Sofitel, Fiji Beach Resort by Hilton.

As a guide it is 1.25km (I measured it) from Sheraton Fiji to Fiji Beach resort by Hilton.

To get around Denarau you can get an allay pass on the Bula Bus for $7.

Also the drinks and food at Port Denarau are well priced. Crown lager was $6 (Fiji) and local pots $4. We bought a big Mud Crab from the lady at the bridge to the island for $20 but I'm told that is about double what locals pay.

Hmm... I've voiced my opinions on Denarau previously - I think it's a horrible cesspit.

The Cook Islands however: much better / more genuine. You fly over the date line, so really gain a day at the beginning a lose a day on the return: makes planing the trip tricky, but it can be done. Plus, you can score J on NZ through Krisflyer for 35k points. Accom in Raro can be tricky as well - as there aren't a huge amount of nice hotels (either ultra expensive or low end). When we went, we stayed at Rumours. But there are also some self services apartments close by (Te Kanawa or something) which looks just as nice and are cheaper also.

If you must go to Denarau, I recommend the french restaurant at the Sofitel. Top marks (it was the highlight of our trip to Fiji). We preferred the Westin to the Sofitel, though we had a coughpier room at the Sofitel so perhaps that had something to do with my views. I just cannot repeat enough how much I dislike Fiji, especially Denarau. If I ever return, I will fly in to Nadi and hop straight on a helicopter/ship to LikuLiku, which is simply fantastic - no Denarau for me.

Thanks to all you good people who proffered advice re Denarau.

Yesterday was outvoted 2 to 1 in a secret ballot to decide between Denarau or Port Vila.

Cruiserette assues me that even though only 2 votes were cast final tally is indeed correct.

I will definately try the Hilton next time I am there as I as not at all impressed by the Westin. I can also recommend Tokoriki and Vomo islands.
