Torres Strait travel recommendations

Last year I set myself a goal of visiting every QFLink destination in QLD (and flying each route), and with the latest sale I've scored myself the last 3 destinations for June this year, flying BNE-CNS-WEI-CNS-HID-CNS-HTI-BNE (the last segment being Jetstar admittedly).

Staying isn't always the plan, as such I'm flying straight through Hamilton Island, as I can't afford the hotels, and stopping for just a few hours in Weipa, as I don't think there'll be anything there. However I will be staying 2 nights in the Torres Strait, flying into Horn Island.

I've done a little digging, found a few hotels and activities, but wondered if anyone has been and where they stayed? At this stage I'm not sure if I want to be on Horn Island, or Thursday Island for instance.

I know there's some war-era things to look at, such as the fort on Thursday Island, and the Quetta memorial church. I had hoped to visit the tip of Australia, Cape York, but it appears I'd need to get to Seisia first, and then hire a 4WD... so might see about a tour.

I stayed at some (huts, for want of a better word) at Seisia a few years ago, right on the beach, in the dry season. Just great! Looked out over the islands, and was right on the beach. We were only there 1 night. Drove up to the Tip the next day. I think they may have been connected with the Caravan park at Seisia, though a friend booked and arranged the travel: I was just a last minute inclusion for the quick trip.

As I recall, Weipa airport is out of the township a fair way. Unless you're into barra fishing or croc spotting, probably not a great lot to do there.

Haven't been to Horn or Thursday Island, sorry. Can't help there.

Is the drive to the tip (and back) long, or can it be done relatively quickly, like less than half a day. I'm going to try and fit as much in as I can

Pretty sure it was a couple hours each way. The road wasn't too bad... dirt/gravel and needs a 4WD, but it wasn't the Old Telegraph track for sure. Not much to see right at the tip, other than the sign saying you are there!
