Air India Delays/Cancellations

Air India is one of a tiny number of foreign airlines to operate triangular routings within Australia, in its case either DEL - SYD - MEL - DEL or the reverse. It operates daily to Oz so travellers can pick a day each way to avoid transiting via the other Australian airport.

This morning AI302 from DEL (B787-8 VT-ANB) is an expected 97 minutes late from DEL and should land at SYD at 0817. Naturally it will be tardy out of MEL this afternoon too - not this morning as scheduled.

Once again, AI302 from DEL to MEL is late, expected in the southern capital 85 minutes behind time at 0755.

AI is chronically late on its Australian triangular route: at least twice in the previous week apart from the instance highlighted above this has been the case.

Just thinking about syd-del in business. I can handle delays but i am concerned about aircraft substitution and ending up in some terrible old seat. Has anyone experienced this on this route?

AI has been in the news lately as from 14 May 2015 if I recall, it is to cease its SYD-MEL and MEL-SYD tag flights that operate on various days of the week. Tag flights have very much gone out of fashion but this move reduces frequency to both SYD and MEL ex or to DEL.

AI302 that normally would arrive in MEL at 0610 on Wednesdays (tomorrow being 13 May) has been cancelled, as has the return AI301 tomorrow morning.

Do these passengers have to wait 24 hours for the next AI flight or would the airline come to an arrangement with SQ (also Star Alliance( or MH (or even partly QF) to get passengers to (and from) India with a shorter delay?

there won't be any aircraft substitution. The route is operated by a 787.

Don't know. It is possible they might fly pax to SYD to make the connection. It might be dependent on class of travel etc etc. There wasn't much tag-traffic on the flight when I did it earlier this year. Light load MEL-SYD which then filled up ex SYD (full flight).

Since it ceased its triangular Australian routing where the flights used to operate a 'tag' leg SYD to MEl or viceversa depending on the day, AI's punctuality seems to have improved.

However on Sat 31 October, B788 VT-ANO on the 1045 hours MEL to DEL did not take off until 1228 with arrival in DEL likely at 1850, 70 minutes behind time.

AI309, the 1045 from MEL to DEL has taken off at 1423 on Sunday 29 November, so with B788 VT-ANN operating the flight it will be almost three hours late arriving in India.

Due to what may have been fog in MEL this morning causing extensive delays, AI308 arrived 69 minutes late on Saturday 5 December at 0809 ex DEL.

AI308 from DEL to MEL's arrival on Thursday 10 December has been delayed from 0700 to an expected 0935. AI309 from MEL to DEL and MUM is expected to be slightly delayed from 1045 to 1110 in departing due to the inbound unpunctuality.

While continuing to be better than when it operated triangular 'tag' flights MEL - SYD or v.v., AI's punctuality on its separate SYD and MEL flights is variable. On Sunday 20 December, AI301, VT-AND (B788), the 1045 hours flight took off at 1153 and is expected in DEL ex SYD at 1837 this evening, 47 minutes late.

The 1110 23 December SYD to DEL, AI301 did not take off until 1216 and hence will arrive at a forecast 1900 hours tonight, instead of its timetabled 1840. B788 VT-ANN is the plane, a sad but evocative registration for anyone who recalls a particular Australian airline that ceased operating more than 14 years ago.

Indeed RB, but this tells prospective flyers not to overly fret if the gap between timetabled departure and take off is close to an hour, depending on variables such as the winds.

AI301, the 1045 from SYD to DEL took off at 1153 and so is about 45 minutes late (B788 VT-ANO.)

The Sunday 10 January AI301 (B788 VT-ANO, again) is similarly about 45 minutes late as it was on New Year's Day 2016.

13 January's SYD - DEL AI301 was timetabled to depart at 1045 but takeoff was at 1203 meaning that B788 VH-ANT will arrive at about 1915, 85 minutes behind time.

AI308 into MEL on Monday 18 January ex DEL (operated by B788 VT-AND) is about 170 minutes late and should be at the gate at 0950. It took off at 1655 on Sunday 17 afternoon despite a pushback time of 1515. The scheduled 1110 return of AI309 (MEL - DEL) should be pretty much adhered to if all goes well during the turnaround.

AI302 (B788 VT-ANV) is about an hour late into SYD on Tuesday 20 January ex DEL and should be at the gate at 0810 or so.

On Friday 18 March, AI301, the 1045 SYD - DEL (B788 VH-ANT) took off at 1124 and is estimated to arrive about 90 minutes late.
