Yeah I got the same story last week with similar spend but have kept the card open.

Have manged a retention bonus at least 3 times prior and haven't bothered for the last 3 years

Asked to cancel my card today and received this message

Effective the Credit Card regulation changes on January 01, 2019, we do not offer any retentions for Cardmembers who decide to cancel their membership.

Amex QFF Ultimate - About $17k spend year to date, called up to cancel and got asked why I'm doing so. Got offered 15k points to keep, less than expected but wasn't really planning on going through with the cancellation anyway.

I also called today to ask about any retention bonus on plat charge as my annual fee was charged on the 1st of this month. Answer: no.

Called the support number this morning to check when my annual fee was due (5 days from today), was asked why I wanted to know and stated I wasn’t getting as much value from the card as previously. Offered 40k MR points.

No recent experience, but a few years ago I tried live chat and was told that I needed to make my request for retention offers via phone.

Plat Charge, renewal will be next month, I called to check if there is any offer to offset the annual fee, a gentleman picked my call and said NO.

I hate to let anyone say NO when they have no authority to say YES. Then, I hang up and called again in 5’, a lovely lady in Manila told me no offer but she can check further if I agree to go through the cancellation process, I agreed and she put me on hold for 3 minutes and came back with 150k points offer. last year was offered 200k twice. I spend 40k-50k / month.

If you are on a spend of $50kmth, you should have a relationship manager. I direct my queries through them and they sort things on the first call (usually)

My renewal for amex platinum edge card is due tomorrow I called them up asking to cancel and they offered me 80K Amex Reward points plus an extra $50 travel credit for the year so for $200 as my yearly fee I said I will keep the card! SCORE !
The guy I spoke to was very nice, he knew from the outset what I was after we had a joke afterwards! gotta try right ....

I hold the Platinum Amex Charge as well as the Explorer card. Having trouble getting value from explorer card now as I would use the travel credit on flights to offset the annual fee. Right so was going to cancel the Explorer and naturally I missed the deadline for when the annual fee was charged 2 days ago. Anyone have a reference for how long I may (or may not) have after the annual fee is charged to request cancelling the card and getting the annual fee waived? (I haven’t laid it yet due in 20+days)

I believe you have a month after it's charged for a full refund.
