Bedbugs in Melbourne

It appears I have been attacked by bedbugs during a recent stay at at top end hotel in Melbourne.

Going to get it checked out by the Dr today but the hotel is the only suspect as I have not stayed anywhere else in the last month.

I'm not one for chasing compensation, but should I advise the hotel?

Buy all means. If only as a courtesy. Hard to prove convincingly though.

Yes but talk to the general manager and tell no one else. Bed bugs are hard to eliminate and they can spread on clothes and baggage placed on a hotel floor. Always use the baggage stand is something I learnt from New York.

Make sure all your clothes are put in the tumble dryer or dry cleaned, this will kill all bed bugs as they cannot survive in hot temperatures. Last thing you want to do is bring it home with you.

Speak to the GM or the department head, they should room move you and upgrade you to a suite or their best available room.

At the same time, they should compensate your for all medical costs and the inconvenience.

Normally they will comp your whole stay so its free of charge.

If you are at the hotel you need to bring this up immediately, otherwise its hard to prove otherwise post stay.

Bed bugs are survivors and are common. Take precautions by never dropping clothes on the hotel floor. It isn't the hotels fault that a customer arrives with bed bugs on their clothing. It just becomes their fault if they do nothing once they are told about it. Using the luggage rack stand should be standard procedure when you arrive at your room to lessen the chance of picking up hitch hikers of the blood sucking kind.

Definitely advise the hotel management. Although you arenot chasing compo (good stuff!) don't mention it either way (leave them guessing about your next move), make the conversation constructive and they may (should) offer something without you asking.

Why? As others have said it's quite common and brought about by travellers. They're uninvited guests and hotel will do everything to rid them.

It's quite common to out affected hotels...

My take on this is that a hotel can be absolutely clean but a guest may bring bed bugs in.

In the restaurant it's highly unlikely patrons will bring in vermin. The restaurateur is likely to have unhygienic conditions to have vermin infestation. I think outing restaurants is fair game.

Not going to name and shame.....and it has taken me a few weeks to work out what it was, so I am long gone from the hotel.

Hopefully I haven't brought them home with me and so far so good.

Rang the hotel an hour ago and am waiting for a call back.

Bed bugs can survive a flight or two in the hold of an aircraft or even on an aircraft seat. Just never place clothes or bags on the hotel room floor to help you to not pick up these hitchhikers. Bringing bed bugs home is always a risk when you are frequently staying in hotels.
