compensation for theft of electrical goods from hotel room

Some items were stolen from our hotel room in thailand valued at approx 1000 aud.

The hotel has offered us a weeks worth of accomodation or marriott rewards points somewhere to the value of the lost goods.

Any suggestions as to what we should take?

:shock: I don't know what you should take, but that's a mighty generous offer! I've had stuff blatantly stolen by hotel staff (literally, I went out when they wanted to clean, waited for them to finish and went back in to find stuff stolen) and management just shrugged and said it couldn't possibly have happened in their hotel.

It can & does happen ever so often in so many hotels & accommodation establishments all over the world..

I have had the same situation happen to me on more than one occasion.. The hotel will always initially be in 'denial" mode.. NEVER EVER TRUST HOTEL STAFF WITH VALUABLES LYING AROUND.

You have to make a decision as to how much each offer is worth to you personally.Obviously if the accommadation were just with the particular hotel and you had no plans to go back to Thailand take the points.But if it was a week at a Marriott worldwide that would probably be the better option.
And valuables dont have to be left lying around to be stolen-plenty of reports of things left in inroom safes walking-just think how does the hotel open such safes if guests forget their code or the vacating guest has left it locked?Certainly on a couple of occasions I have had to get an in room safe opened when it had been left locked.Though it didn't dawn upon me the significance of that until the second time!

Hmm I know this now. Funnily enough, I've never had anything (except for some biscuits and chocolates, which might have been an accident!) stolen from a hostel with heaps of people milling around unlocked stuff. But a couple of times from hotels

Mmm.. Had some clients that had the whole safe & its contents stolen once.. & that was from a hotel in Sydney!

hmmm! great offer for the inconvenience. Although in a way it sucks that you have lost the goods Take the week worldwide I guess, gives you better flexibility.

Plus you can claim the theft from your travel insurance. I'd see if the police can come to your hotel and take a report from there (which I'm guessing you'll need for the claim) - save you spending time at a thai police station!

Ouch! But a compensation offer of equal value is gold. You needed to upgrade that stuff anyway.
And double dip by claiming the insurance.

And on that note. I just pulled the Kensington Lock out of my bag and locked my laptop to the table. My bag is heavy enough without trapsing all over Alcatraz Island with a full size laptop in it.

I never leave valuables in the room. Even in a suite at the Hilton, but especially in Thailand.

I swear two pairs of my socks are missing though. I'm sure I packed them.

I would take whihc offer sutied you and then claim it on Travel Insurance.

But losing the items would be the biggest pain right now

I must be very lucky then. Never had anything stolen from a hotel room, even though I leave valuables lying around. It's a bit of a game, I think.

Thefts by staff happen. Staff accidentally throwing out valuable items also occurs at times. Room keys are also occasionally incorrectly given out to others. Some hotel door locks can be opened using commercially available tools.

If it's valuable - don't leave it out as a temptation.
