Editing an earlier post

I'm trying to edit a post that I put up back in May last year but can't see the edit option.
Am I just missing something or does the editting of older posts get switched off after a certain time?

You have 24 hours after submitting a post to edit it.

If you need to have it change, send a PM to the moderators requesting they edit the post on your behalf - along with the changes requested.

As a further comment, you have 5 minutes after posting to edit it without it noting that it was edited at the bottom of the post, unless you add a reason for editing, that'll force that bit to display. Useful for proofreading and spelling corrections after you've just posted, so you look like you got it right the first time

Some do. I'm sure I'm not alone.

I quite often edit my post with additional information and corrections in the 5-minute window

I go (generally) as well.

I'm often tempted to coment about sum off the spelling I see hear ("loose" instead of "lose", "isle" instead of "aisle"), but it wood take to much thyme.

Does anyone know when a forum thread is locked, for some reason I thought it was 18 months but can anyone confirm that for me.

Threads that have been dormant for 18 months or more have the "reply to thread" function disabled automatically.

Is there any reason why the 24 hour limit is in place? Why not no limit, or even a limit of, say, 3 months?

I got nothing against the current system. I know that there must be a good reason for putting in the 24 hour limit in place, I just can't think of it myself (e.g. I can't imagine how spammers can exploit this).

If you have a line of argument say on the Off Topic Thread, then you could create an argument then you could delete it and not leave a trail, another line of thinking is that once it is up on the website then it is part of public record, I think admin has this line of thinking.

Perhaps, but deleted posts are still stored somewhere (or so I'm lead to believe). You can't just write something, delete it, and expect no one will ever find out about it. I would think that posts even have an edit history somewhere (again, so I'm lead to believe!) so another way to overcome the difficulty is to ban the ability to delete posts (except by the mods). You might end up with more "dummy posts", e.g. a post changed to OK folks, move along, nothing to see here....

Deleted posts can be un deleted by the moderation team, which happens from time to time when more facts are made available. The way back machine tends to take care of websites in general that think things can be deleted regardless of the site .

I've never understood why they have such a complicated word for that phenomena..you'd think they say lysdexic..
