Electronic authorisation required for EU travel from 2025

According to this article, non-EU citizens will need to get a "ETIAS" travel authorisation prior to travel to the European Schengen area from 2020. The authorisation would last for 3 years and cost a small fee, similar to the US/Canadian visa waiver I presume. Slightly annoying but I can't see this being a huge hassle.

I hope this means, in reciprocation, that EU visitors coming to Australia will now have to pay a fee for an ETA, instead of being able to travel on a free eVisitor. (eVisitor is basically the free version of the ETA, implemented by Australia after Europeans complained about having to pay a Travel Authorisation fee, when Australians didn't for Schengen visa free travel.)

Right, like Australia is so reciprocal, then why don't they insist on GE for Australian citizens? Answer: Because the Australian government would have to spend some money to make it happen I believe.

I guess someone will do the math. If you had a choice of destination, and paying for an e-visa would deter people, I can't see how it would be good for Australia. We need everyone we can get!

If such a fee was introduced I'd be surprised if one of the main tourism departments in NSW, QLD or Vic didn't offer to pay the costs of the visa on behalf of intending tourists.

I highly doubt any state would do that, as they don't do at the moment for other ETA visitors from; the USA, Canada, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei (or Taiwan issued passport holders) - all of whom pay the ETA processing fee (as part of the Federal government's transparent user pays services).

In fact I suspect the cost to any state to implement a suggested $20 "refund" on arrival, for international ETA visitors, would be quite prohibitive (particularly for Qld with multiple gateways) - at least doubling the refund amount with administrative and bureaucratic costs... and that money would have to come out of; "roads, schools and hospitals", so it won't be a vote winning exercise!

EU passport holders will have to pay, just like everyone else mentioned above, I have little doubt about it. Potentially leaving UK tourists and NZ citizens as the only non-Australians with fee free access to Australia.

That's why I said I guess it depends on the math. If there is a downturn in visitor numbers because of a fee, governments might be willing to pay $20 to secure the boost to the economy. Victoria heavily subsidises the F1 for example because of the economic benefits. (In 2015 the subsidy was $61m - that would equate to around 3 million visitors)

Singapore also has the Changi $ promotion. Although not sure who pays for that.

I Hate filling in an ESTA and the fact you have to pay for it. So ETIAS is going to be no better. The spontaneity of travelling also gets affected. I loved the fact you could hope on a plane and travel to Europe show your Australian passport and be done with it.

Australian citizens traveling to the E.U. for business or leisure reasons will be obligated to apply for an ETIAS visa waiver once the program is fully implemented in 2021. ETIAS, or the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) has already received the full backing of the European Union.
Australians will be eligible to travel to European countries but will require a travel authorization (ETIAS) and meet the various requirements for Australians visiting Europe.
The authorization will be valid for five years and multiple entries. However, the permitted period of stay for Australians will still be a maximum of 90 days within six months.

This seems to be perfectly reasonable to me. After all EU citizens coming to Australia require at least an eVisitor or ETA. The process seems likely to be pretty painless and easy to use. It should also speed up processing times at arrival airports.

Just had another look ahead of a September 2022 visit, and still says late 2022. So no firm date as yet.
