Flying Syd-JFK Return - have a question...

im looking at booking a QF flight Sydney to New York (JFK) return. im looking at spending a few days in NY then heading to boston and DC. I am wondering on flying back to Sydney, would the airline allow me to checkin to the return flight in LAX, rather than having to go back to NYC?? anyone know?

If you are booked for SYD-JFK-SYD , you will need to return to JFK. If you want to start the return from LAX, then can just book a SYD-JFK / LAX-SYD ticket

No, its classed as an open jaw ticket, so you'd pay either the equivalent of half of each return ticket (eg. half the return JFK and half the return LAX levels) or you pay the higher of the two depending on the airfare rules, usually the half half is most common.

Book it on Qantas.com as a multi-city trip.

Commonly ime 1500/2 plus 1000/2 = $1250 but does depend greatly on the fare rules. best thing to do is price it out and find out what is quoted

• SYD-JFK-SYD: $1638 (Fare $1300, QUSAX2)
• SYD-JFK,LAX-SYD $1535 (Fare $1200, QUSAX2 ($1300/2) / QUSAX2 ($1100/2))
• SYD-LAX-SYD: $1432 (Fare $1100, QUSAX2)

On another date, the SYD-JFK fare was higher:

• SYD-JFK,LAX-SYD $1685 (Fare $1350, NUSAX2 ($1600/2) / QUSAX2 ($1100/2))

The taxes were similar.

cheers serfty, so i could pay $1685 (inc taxes) to do what i want (Syd-JFK, then LAX-SYD) in Feb.......

also i thought Qantas flew the A380 on a New York leg (on their website in the news area it said they have introduced it, but when i do a search on the weekly flight schedule, it says 747 plane.

Actually, I was incorrect and have adjusted the post.

There was no Q class SYD to JFK on the day I tested so a higher N class fare was utilised.

In this case it is as Dave Noble posted - the fares are averaged (as permitted by the Q/NUSAX2 fares' Open Jaw Combination rules).

If it was me, I'd actually fly back to JFK. Unless your flying across the US in F (or J if exists) Y in a US based airline can be hell.

I've actually decided next time I fly across the US I'll be using QF107 \ QF108, even if it means spending a night in LA or NY as a result.
