A question for anybody who's applied for the TTP - I've just submitted my application and received an email titled "Notification of completion of application registration", and see this in the portal: View attachment 375552

Am I now done, and just have to wait for preliminary inspection to happen?

Yes that's correct. Expect the preliminary inspection to happen in late May/early June.

What's required these days?

I would never use Google for Japanese trains. Always go with Japan transit planner.

Which one?

Google Maps has normally been quite good and highly regarded. It's just been recently that things have been "odd".
Not a problem for people who have a reasonable understanding of the train system. Could be a big issue for people who haven't been there before.

Like me . Been to Japan about 6 times, but only Tokyo, on business, with local contacts. First time wandering around by myself coming up.

Simple. I t is called Japan transit planner in the App Store.

Yes, but from what I heard it can take 2 months.

Google maps is having more moments.

Suggested option one for ikebukuro to my friends place over the marunouchi line. 2 buses, 20mins longer and more than twice the cost.

On another note suica is easily obtainable at any major tokyo station if you go to the foreigner travel centre.

You have non-default Options set there, they could be affecting it.

I did check that, it's actually really silly and shows that despite all options being selected.

I think it tries to 'minimise' walking. I always select the station directly as my start/finish point and that avoids too many crazy bus routings.

I was in a rural area with very infrequent service recently and the suggested route was dire (some 2 hours longer than the route I had been told to take, which didn't appear on google maps at all). It seemed to prioritise that because the transfer to the express train was 3 minutes instead of 15, even though the total travel time was much longer? I couldn't work out the logic on that one.

Wow, just came across this. Was in Japan Jan/Feb and yes had some issues with Google Maps. Explains a bit, really would have loved to use the Japan Transit Planner app. On another note I've heard they are no longer updating www.hyperdia.com - that was my go-to for so many years.
