Jetstar will have the capability to fly into southern Europe when
it takes delivery of four leased Airbus A330s from December next year.
Spokesman Simon Westaway said the aircraft would have more favourable
weight capabilities giving it scope into Southern Europe.
Destinations in Greece and Italy would be within range, via an Asian hub,he
added. "It's something that we'll think about over the next year".
"We could go into more Asian ports, look at more growth destinations in
Australia or start Southern European services,"he said.

re: Jetstar Says Europe "Back In Frame"

Even though his sort of move will open up the European doors to the many australians that cant afford to travel that far, i still dont like it!

Jetstar has just about taken over the Asian travel market, soon enough there will be one qantas flight a week going to LON,LAX,JFK etc etc... everything else will be zero service budget airlines! :(

re: Jetstar Says Europe "Back In Frame"

I don't really know how this will go. Europe is very accessable by a number of Asian airlines at already very low fares. Korean Air frequently offer east coast to LHR, CDG etc etc in the $1400 region and its still only a one stop service.

JQ have gone well so far operating non-stop services that are largely unserviced. For the average person here, travelling SYD-SIN-HKT or SYD-KUL-SGN or whatever isn't a big deal, but the average punter would rather just go SYD-HKT and not worry about connections.

Either way, on the way to Europe a stop will be required (probably in BKK). I dare say TG will have fairly similarly priced fares, so what does JQ offer that they don't? While to this point people have been prepared to pay the same (or often more) for convienience, however when one has to make a stop somewhere, why would you do it low cost? It'll be interesting anyway.

I suspect JQ will use hubs and thus fly from SIN, and you will actually fly a JQ/3K combined service.

The dark horse would be SGN, on a JQ/BL service.

re: Jetstar Says Europe "Back In Frame"

One would hope that Jet* have the cost base to reliably offer cheaper fares to Europe.

Now if only they'd get over trying to convince us that *Class is international business they might actually drop their pricing so peopel are willign to pay for it. I think it's funny i can travel to the US in VAust PE for the same price that i can travel to coughet on in *Class.

Why oh WHY do the airlines want a 100% surcharge for a PE seat

Having had a look at some MEL-HKT prices early next year, much more likely I would choose VAust PE over JQ *Class. PErhaps people should be more willing to change airlines, and if people started voting with their wallet then maybe they would look at their prices!

re: Jetstar Says Europe "Back In Frame"

A report in Fridays Australian (Aviation Section) had Bruce Buchanan stating that JQ will overtake DJ in about 12 months to become No2 in Aus; includes O/S flights.
Reckon if I had a wealthy father like QF handing me Cities scattered all over Asia, I'd Be a happy little Vegemite to.
But, could it mean that in a few years QF will be 3rd to DJ and JQ :?:
Not a pretty thought........

Cheers Dee

I think it was in terms of Overtaking Virgin in Revenue, not in terms of fleet, market share etc..

Presuming it includes BL, 3K etc, and higher revenue from JQ Int, and next 8 or so deliveries in the next year, so not really surprising.

re: Jetstar Says Europe "Back In Frame"

Personally i'm waiting for jetstar to fly to europe. This would give me a starclass to one of the few international destinations that i visit. Benefits are J points and status and a better seat than normal Y. In terms of pricing of star class, jet star has previously stated that it is priced at the cost of full economy (I guess on QF). So double status over a full economy seat on QF and a bigger seat seems to be a big advantage IMO.

BTW the Australian also reported on this last thursday, in case anyone is interested in comparing the stories.

re: Jetstar Says Europe "Back In Frame"

Since QF do not currently fly to southern Europe its not really taking anything away except a smallish amount of through traffic via LHR/FRA.
If anything it creates its own market for a lot of people wanting to visit the area.

re: Jetstar Says Europe "Back In Frame"

Definately a separate market to London or Frankfurt than to Greece and Italy. Qantas flew to Athens and Rome until relatively recently and I'm sure regaining the rights for Jetstar to do wouldn't be too difficult.

The problem is, Jetstar haven't really been competing with Air Asia since they entered the market on price which is presumably the main reason people fly low cost carriers over full srevice options. Heavy discounting by Air Asia is concerning, so time will tell.

Still suprised they haven't put on seasonals to Sapporo, or that there's not the demand in winter for directs from Sydney, Melbourne etc to Osaka or Tokyo rather than faffing around in variously Gold Coast/Brisbane/Cairns. Is expansion to Sapporo a limitation by their fleet?

Yes a separate market. But besides a QF codeshare hkg to rome on CX, athens and rome are serviced by QF via LHR or FRA, even selling seats on a LH flight from FRA to athens. So much better for those australians who would rather visit rome or athens than vist LHR.

The more interesting possiblity that was first mentioned by jetstar for sorthern europe was MUC. well of interest to me.

That is an extremely scary thought.

It wasn't that long ago QF stopped flying to Rome and Athens.

Assuming Jetstar would be trying to entice Italians and Greeks travelling to Southern Europe they are likely to struggle.

Currently SQ and TG offer 3x weekly flights each to Athens. Both airlines offer extremely good deals and it is not uncommon to get a package SYD-ATH with 3-4 nights accommodation in BKK or SIN included. A friend was able to purchase an airfare SYD-ATH return on TG recently for $1600.

It will be interesting to see JQ airfares and what will be included. From experience I know most Greeks and Italians want generous luggage allowances (almost to the point where they refuse to accept overweight luggage fees), meals provided and unlimited access to water, coffee and/or alcohol. Time will tell....

Given that Margaret Jackson is no longer at Qantas and from memory her partner no longer own part of Niseko ski resort....

That aside, I still think Japan is underserved by JQ

LOL don't worry, go check out all the respective airline traffic numbers and then I think you will feel a little better.... Depends what you mean by a 'few' years I guess

re: Jetstar Says Europe "Back In Frame"

From the viewpoint on the western coast, Japan is totally underserved by all airlines.

It would be slightly better if QF/JQ codeshared with JL and/or AA.

re: Jetstar Says Europe "Back In Frame"

I dug out the AFR story on this today. It mentions that they are considering flights to Athens, Rome and Milan.
