Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Trying an aged Wynns tonight - I picked a few "cheap" aged wines up from Langtons to explore expecting to tip a few down the sink. This is the oldest of them so I thought it was a good place to start. I have not had any wine this old before so I cannot compare it to anything but it is quite nice with layers of flavour - but not much nose. The tannin is silky smooth. I like it.

Rockford Rod & Spur Shiraz - Cabernet 2010 ($32 CD / $33.51 landed)
What a Stellar Wine!!! Rod & Spur is a little forgotten next to Basket Press, or Rifle Range, but the traditional Claret blend is a formidable wine. Bold upon opening, and softened just a little (just right) after 45 mins to an hour. Full Bodied dry red goodness.

It is very hard to fault this wine. Certainly will have longer legs, but drinking very well now.

Looking forward to drinking a Rod and Spur. Loved the Rifle Range, far more than the Basket Press

Vintage! I have a serious soft spot for Wynns, my mum worked there in the 70s. I have a very cool vintage poster on the wall of the 1976 Hermitage.

TBH some Rocky's are overrated - The best value is the Rifle Range IMHO.

Beautiful food and some fancy liquors make for an enjoyable experience.

New GSM blend from yet another Larry Cherubino label!

Very enjoyable, good earthy tones and a nice bit of pepper.

There's also a Riesling gewurztraminer blend on this label that I'm looking forward to sampling soon.

TBH I just used Google Images and searched for Leconfield label images - sorted through til I found the best and played around a bit in PS to get it somewhere near suitable - I also did it for the Obsidian that I bought same week:

Stinking hot day in Perth, but with the air-con running, I felt like a red tonight. Pulled this out of the cellar. 2006 vintage, which was the first vintage of this reincarnation. Still a bit cold and difficult to assess, but no doubting the value for money here.

Friday night Chardonnay with Coral Trout - delayed because of very unusual circumstances (we ate too much for lunch).

So Saturday night... Brilliant fresh Coral Trout in panko crumbs cooked for 4.6 minutes, turned once, in rice bran oil. Fish from Rufus King (Ashgrove) and a (very) fitting white I thought.



Smokey dusty nose, 'loverly' buttery character with limes, lycheefruits, slight passion fruit, austere tannins. Fabulous.

Yes I originally used a Riedel Chardonnay glass but didn't do it justice. The Zalto Pinot glass was perfect. Brilliant in fact to open the wine.

Surprising the difference the Zalto made.

AnonymousCoward, I know you have the 2008 too. Did you come to a different conclusion? You drink more of the older vintages, so will probably have a more informed view than me.

Tonight's drinking was a Cullen Diana Madeline 2008 (courtesy of a swap with Wozza) and a Yeringberg 2004. Similar Bordeaux blends from opposite ends of the country. I found the Yeringberg a bit smoother, whilst the Cullen had more grippy tannins, but others at dinner preferred the Cullen. Both the 2005 and 2008 Diana Madeline are excellent wines - personally I think I might prefer the 2005 at this stage, just because it's had that extra aging - in a couple more years I might like the 2008 just as much
