Paid seat selection in J?

Hi all,
I have a booking in J on QR metal (but booked on AA codeshare) for CGK to JFK. I can see the seat map on all sectors but can only select a seat if willing to pay a fee. Is this correct? I had "assumed" seat selection would be included with a paid J fare, but perhaps not the case on QR? Should mention I am not part of privilege club (and only QF Silver). Thanks for any insight!

I think some QR J fares are 'lite' or 'unbundled', so seat selection (and bags) may not be included. Could be that?

Thanks @RooFlyer - I had no idea about the 4 J classes. Really helpful article Looks like I have a "comfort" fare which should give me complimentary seat selection, so am confused! Glad to know I should still have lounge access though.
