As QE2 was 96yrs old, Im sure the mint had been accruing change of currency in their budget over the last few years

They change the effigy every few years anyway. The $5 note will probably get an update as well.

I was up this morning making our normal cuppa when my my wife came to the kitchen telling me she’d died. We broke with protocol and put TV on. Sad day in history and wait for the coronation of the King. Queen Consort (Camilla) is a switch as well from King Consort (Philip).

Sad that it’s not going to be Diana. She’d have been a great Queen Consort

Edit: apparently not, Whilst she would've been called by the title Queen, she would've been a Queen Consort. Whereas Queen Elizabeth II was a Queen Regent.

Actually QE2 (like QE1 and QV) was QUEEN REGNANT - A queen regnant is a queen who is absolute ruler with all sovereign powers in her own right.

You can also have:
QUEEN DOWAGER - A queen dowager is the widow of a former king and the mother of the present monarch.
QUEEN CONSORT - A queen consort is the wife of a present king.
QUEEN REGENT - A queen regent is the wife of a present king who is unable to rule and she is ruling on his behalf

The husband of a Queen Regnant is a Prince Consort, they dont get the title King.

Not a flattering picture of Charles, and I'm wondering if he should be facing left.
I thought it was practice that the images changed the direction they faced upon a change of monarch.

E.g. as per this image of King George V on an Australian coin.

I don't think you could describe QE2 as an 'absolute ruler' . Far from it. Sovereign powers in her own right, of course. But the powers of a sovereign, not an absolute ruler. If she was an absolute ruler, she would have told Tony Blair to sod off when he said he was scrapping Britannia.

Wikipedia is quick off he mark, naturally. I've had this page bookmarked for years, to interpret old deeds which are dated "In the third year of the reign of ..."
