I would have thought the 737 fleet always had one. Either that, or you just can all the xx:15 and xx:45 flights between MEL and SYD and get a plane that way

A clean engine failure is not a mayday, in itself. In a twin it would be generally be a pan. That’s still an emergency landing, but not overly ‘emergency’. Emergencies are dynamic, and can change in nature, for better or worse. A depressurisation is immediately life threatening at high level, but is mostly an inconvenience down low. An engine failure at high level, will almost certainly mean you can’t maintain that level. I can imagine scenarios in which you’ll need that mayday call to get ATC to give the immediate clearance you need. A minor situation might escalate.

It sounds to me as if there is a second story overlaid on this one, that we haven’t heard much of yet.

Almost every observant person will know that the engine flaps do open upon a plane landing/during the landing process.

No, but three in two days is perhaps worth a mention. It’s just not just these aviation type stories - whenever things happen a couple of times in some sector and then a third occurs which is just coincidental, they will highlight the cluster ( eg unrelated minor earthquakes). I’m not saying I’m a fan, but it’s not a total off the scale thing.

and possibly something else tonight - QF783 MEL-PER (A332 - EBJ) appears to have had to return to the gate - doesn't look like it left the ground. could be anything of course. We know how these things go.

the terrible "reporting" of the "visible engine damage" with vision of the normal thrust reverse in operation (sleeve open) is embarassingly poor but the pile on from the uninformed is mind bogglingly stupid.

I wouldn't worry too much. The news cycle moves quickly. I suspect now most of the focus is on the Clarke-yarbury-stefanovic-Edwards days of our lives.

One always wonders about peoples mobiles being left on during flight. I like turning mine off for a bit of peace and quiet once the 1L door is closed. I often see people still using their phones after the announcement but yet to call anyone out.

But how is a particular passenger being singled out unless they were brought to the attention of crew (asked to turn off and refused)? Then is banned?

With wifi on most domestic aircraft these days, it's hard to know if someone playing on their phone is using wifi legitimately or even doing something offline (watching a saved video or something for example_ vs still using cell service.
