returning to Australia from Indonesia without cancellation

Dear Aff members, has anyone successful applied for an exemption and flown to Bali and returned on their booked return in the last month?
I would be applying on compassionate grounds for the exemption due to not being able to see my wife for almost a year but worried the arrival limit cap my see my return ticket cancelled. I am assuming that due to the lesser amount of Australians in Indonesia at the moment and being on a one flight hop direct to Australia may ease the possibility of this worry?

This is flying in and out of Perth and knowing I will be paying for my own quarantine

I'd also add the following questions:
- are there actually any direct flights to DPS at the moment? I thought they'd all been cancelled?
- even if you get approved to depart Aus, isn't Bali closed for international travellers?

No direct flights to DPS. Fly to JKT then domestic to DPS
Closed for VOA but open for KITAS/KITAP holders with a negative COVID test.

Reports are if you plan to stay outside of Australia for 12-24months++ (aka: you'll need to show Visa approval for that length for Indonesia), your chances are good.

I see it this way - pick a country to live in for the next year and stay there.
If you're an Australian citizen - getting out of Australia is the most difficult piece. Once you're out - moving around the rest of the world is a lot easier.

As for re-entry at a later stage (make sure it's more than one year from now!!!) --- things will be more relaxed later down the road.
Worst case, you'll be shelling out for a full fare business class ticket - maybe what, $10K?

I wouldn’t say moving around Asia is a whole lot easier, there’s a lot of countries that won’t allow non residents to enter, but at least there aren’t onerous restrictions on departing from many countries (just the quarantine charge on return). But certainly it seems moving around Europe, the ME and the America’s is a lot easier.

I would say that travel as you haven't seen your wife for a year may not get approval to leave Australia. However, they do seem to be ok if people are suggesting they won't be back for several months - so as said, you may need to stay away for an extended period of time.

Shouldn't your wife count as "immediate family member" and eligible to enter Australia with 14 days quarantine? That should take away the trouble of applying for exemption or staying overseas for extended period. All you need is to wait(or pay for business class seat) to be able to get to Australia.

We figured that given I am the citizen of the country that the exemption is needed the success rate for approval would be higher to be granted to myself exiting and returning than a red flagged country arriving.
