This could cause chaos when strong westerlies blow. Diversions, cancellations, and delays.
And just for 90 meters.

Given that Melbourne Airport has managed to complete a widening of a main runway with minimal disruption, and also Auckland Airport, it beggers belief that SACL would need to close their EW (07-25) runway for one year, or at least work in a way that keeps it operational on demand! Unless it requires reclaiming a portion of land towards the river at the western end, and/or re-routing the perimeter road at the eastern end and the required machinery will create a height restriction problem....heaven help SYD travellers during a strong westerly...

Come to think of it I seem to remmeber there being a large sewerage pipe running along the edge of the western airside, that may need to be re-routed - but that still shouldn't take a year!!!

I was in your fair city yesterday having lunch at a very nice restaurant at St Kilda, and I enjoyed it once the clounds burnt off around midday and the sunshine, such as it was, appeared.

However it is really not the same as the feeling I had on return when our magnificent harbour and beautiful city emerged as we descended to land north to south. It would take more than the occasional loss of the third runway for me to give up the sparkle of SYD.

I live in Botany and sometimes cop the noise of the RWY 07 (Eastern) departures.

Can't say I'm upset, but the pilots may need to spruce up their crosswind landing skills

Not even as you've put it. The under run / over run is to be extended TO 90 metres. So no real indication to the length of actual extension :!:

Obviously significant structural and support work required though one year does seem like a really extended period.

Fair point straitman. I must admit I'm the worst kind of Sydney fan - someone who has lived in other Australian "cities" and travelled to many more overseas and therefore I'm really a Sydney "import" who is a raving fan of this place. I know it can be annoying to some...particularly those from "dreary city".

The only capital I've not lived in for any length of time is ADL. Quite frankly (and not aimed as a put down) SYD drives me up the wall. To each their own :!:

Interesting spin that the TV news harped on about the extra noise to Sydneysiders - no mention of the fact that people currently suffering the noise will get a year's respite - but that wouldn't be news would it?

A year of disruption sounds crazy - I guess with the usual decision tree of "Cheap, good or fast - pick two", it seems that SACL went for Cheap and... umm cheap...

One year does sound like a long time to close to the east-west runway but I am not complaining at the opportunity of less aircraft noise during that time.

The length of the closure/upgrade has been blamed on certain infrastructure in the area:

"Although five safety areas have already been extended at a cost of $3 million, the extension of the western end of the east-west runway's safety area is budgeted at $65 million and will take far longer to complete.

This is because it is the site of some of the city's most important infrastructure, including Sydney Water's heritage-listed southern and western suburbs ocean outfall sewer, the M5 East motorway tunnel and Energy Australia's high-voltage power feeder cables."
