Booked the following for 2 of our friends who are joining us on the US leg of our trip. For April next year - 2 and a bit weeks total.

SYD-BNE-HKG-JFK(dest)-HKG(stop)-BNE-SYD

All in J, AU domestic legs with QF, all other flights with CX.
Very easy to find space this far out especially the NYC>HKG legs.

110k per person and $215.24 each in taxes/fees.

you have to book directly with USDM as these are using USDM points. Can't be done on-line for partner awards.

I have 170K USDM miles, would that get me in F if available?

that's the issue - the best site to find the availability. Most I think will say the JAL website is best for showing actual (rather than phantom) availability. But it's clunky to use.

You can use QF or CX... but bear in mind if you have status the QF website may show additional availability which would not be available to USDM.

170K would get you 1 F ticket to Europe (150k) or one F to USA (140k). If you travel on CX (or any other carrier such as QF to connect to Asia or HKG) J and then connect to Europe in F you will be charged the F mileage for the whole itinerary. But that's worth it for the couple dollars extra.

I used KVS Tool to search, but you should be able to use QF/CX website.

I think that is a myth. I don't know if QFF actually advertise that "benefit" or not but there was also a thread on AFF recently where a lot of people compared what a QF Silver member was seeing and what a WP could see in terms of award availability and the PS could see more seats!

I think it usually happens more on QF services (particularly domestic), as there have definitely been times where I've seen more dom seats as a WP than my partner who's NB...

I think the PS thing is a bug. Even some seats that the PS could see "extra" couldn't be booked, or ended up being nonsense.

Probably more common in Y (i.e. as a WP, you could scoop a Y award on almost any flight), but I have seen differences in the premium classes, even in F (i.e. a WP sees a seat that others cannot).

Plus, if a seat is not available online, WPs can call QFF to put in a request to Yield to open one for them.

Anyway, that's pretty irrelevant for US DM (except also that due to release time differences, QFF get "first dibs" at seats before US DM). I have seen cases of QFF showing CX seating which is not bookable by US DM, which is further reflected when checking with the JL tool. The availability on longhaul HKG routes to anywhere except Australia and New Zealand, however, tend to be the pretty accurate on QFF (cf. routes to/from Australia/New Zealand and some intra-Asia routes).

How many rules would this fall foul of:

CBR SYD AKL (have lunch w' a mate) JFK (Destination) SFO (stopover) SYD CBR ?

Or would it be better to go SYD AKL CDG JFK (D) SFO (S) SYD CBR ? F would be good as I have 170K miles. I guess the 2 US cities are a problem?

Due to CX stopping their 747 flights to the US this year, some F capacity is also reduced.

You need to try and piece together your itinerary and actually look at the airlines you want to fly - if they even fly the routes you want. AKL is potentially a significant detour (not on most direct route) and is almost probably not going to be considered a oneworld hub city. Already two potential stumbling blocks.

I have found the One World site interactive map useful in working out possible alternatives when an itinerary is proving difficult. Normally getting out of Australia is one of the most difficult legs particularly if you are starting from Perth where Qantas really goes nowhere.
