Surprised to hear the SS3 is your pick for "worst J seat" - the Zodiac Aries is a similar design to the Cirrus III, which is also operated by CX, AA, DL, and AY amongst others. I've flown both Aries and Cirrus III a few times and found them comfortable enough, and I'm definitely on the larger side.

I'd pick it over JAL's Shell Flat Neo seat any day.

Isn't it grotesque!?!

Seat reclined the second the seat belt sign went off - much to the annoyance of bloke in row 2 - AND he didn't recline to sleep, was just drinking and playing around with his leg on the tray table and bulkhead the whole flight. Tray table partially protruding in to the aisle.

Alternatively the airline could actually provide decent pitch and a proper leg rest? Other operators of 737s and A320s can offer 42-45 inches in business class.

Certainly, but shouldn't blame the airline for this guy, other passengers in the same situation don't do this.

Surely OH & S becomes a factor when pax act in this way?
This guy is the typical "entitled" style who shows no respect for fellow pax, the airline or anything except himself.

Wouldn't it be more about tray table sticking out into aisle, that a FA could easily run into in the course of their duties?

Maybe other passengers haven't thought of this to get comfortable? Or maybe they aren't phsyically able to do it? (I've tried using a tray table once to try and get comfortable to sleep in ye olde days cradle seats. Didn't help much, but I was willing to try anything at that stage )

Except for socks on the inflight magazine (the guy should have perhaps removed the magazines first), is this really impacting on other pax? The recline into the pax behind would happen regardless of where the guy's legs or feet are.

I would say SRS65's assessment is quite accurate and that would be what most find offensive; total oblivion to the concept of considering other pax and, whilst we don't actually know of his other sins, we are quite happy to imagine a whole raft of unendearing, selfish traits, based on a single snapshot.

The pax in row 1 is reclining his seat as it is designed to do. How he has his legs (resting on the magazine rack, table, or whether he had them flat on the floor or even using cabin baggage as a footrest) doesn't make any difference to the angle of recline to the passenger behind.

The pax behind bought their ticket knowing the recline in QF business. And he has also chosen to cross his legs, which there just isn't enough space to do in this type of configuration. While there's a lot of debate about reclining in economy class, the same doesn't really apply to business class where an ordinary person can still eat their meal even with the seat in front fully reclined.

It’s why I will often take a Y flight when I can grab row 4 over a J ticket when row 1 is already taken on anything over 3 hours on QF.

I wish more airlines would make an announcement about being considerate of other passengers when reclining, especially during mealtimes (and foreshadowing that crew may ask you to adjust your seat). Probably won’t stop the uncaring oblivious.

I rarely recline in Y or J but always turn around or ask the crew to let the pax behind me know when I’m about to. Always get a very generous thank you either at the time or at the end of the flight. Not hard to make a potentially difficult situation easy.

It's called painting a visual image in order to add colour & texture to what would otherwise be a very bland text in order to add spice and flavour for the reader to better enjoy and appreciate the situation being described. Forums like this would otherwise be impossibly boring reads without it.

Actually I think it was embellishing an otherwise non-story with irrelevant points. Someone goes to the bathroom for 15 minutes. Gee, ban them from the airline immediately.
