Technical Fault There Won’t Be Any Inflight Entertainment

Personally I prefer to read a book or magazine.

Ive tried the book thing - before ebooks. I suppose that is why there are often bookstores at airports

However, the book thing does not do it for me. Sudoku on the other hand does it for me.

On the first SYD-LAX A380 flight in January 2022 we just got a $50 book shop voucher as the entertainment hadn't been 'reactivated' No points.

I bought enough books to make up for the entertainment but I just couldn't get over having no idea where we were or how much time there was left on the flight without checking my phone and guessing.

I read books for entertainment and never look at the IFE except to keep the map open. Like @NSun, I would be lost without the map.

For those who need the map to work out when you will land, you can also look at the time you took off and estimate flight time which every captain for first officer tells you once in the air.

I think the map enthusiasts are interested more in knowing where they are and what they can see outside rather than knowing the estimated time of arrival.

Wonder if the aircraft is VH-EBS arriving from CGK as QF40 which is already delayed (potentially due to IFE technical fault)?

The locations usually annotated on the IFE are usually too far to be seen looking out the window.

Some of us know geography. So, for example, on Friday I was able to spot IKA airport by knowing from the air map that we were travelling through Iran.



Or last year I was able to follow the route I had traveled in 2019 through TJ, UZ and TM. This is Khorog in Tajikistan.



And I was able to photograph the pyramids by knowing we were heading towards CAI.



I knew the cities, the air map provided information on the rough area.

I love the moving map, it's pretty common for long hauls that for at least part of the flight I'll turn off the movie and just look out the window and try and identify what I can see on the map.

And being able to see outside assumes several things - it's a day flight, there is no cloud cover, and often it's inconsiderate when the rest of the cabin want to close the blinds.
Assuming that's all fine, lack of IFE does not stop the passenger just looking out the window.
Some of my most memorable views out the window did not require an IFE to tell me to look - like a meteor

Works at night time as well, see a collection of lights, look at IFE to work out exactly what city is down there.

Also yes, sometimes all blinds are closed in a cabin, but not always. Plus I'm more than happy to raise my window shade just a bit to see what's going on outside. I try not to disturb people, but I also note that I'm rarely the only person raising up the blinds to see outside.

I just use my imagination. “Ooh we’re flying over (Lahore for example)” and then scroll through images in my mind of the Shalimar gardens, fort, mosques etc. Great stuff
